I've heard these statements thousands of times in my office from people who are facing simple misdemeanor offenses to Class-X felonies. Although the vast majority of police officers in this country are honest, hard-working men and women, they are often forced to make split second decisions on whether or not to charge someone. Often times that pressure or incorrect or false information provided to them, can result in the arrest and charging of  innocent people. Whatever the case, the end result is that many times innocent people are wrongfully arrested, charged and convicted.  In other instances people who made a bad decision have their constitutional rights trampled on. In either case, the end result is that you are convicted and sentenced.

If the police do not believe that you did anything wrong, they should have no objection to you having a lawyer present when they question you. The only reason that police do not want a lawyer present, is to insure that they hold all of the cards during the questioning, including the ability to "record" what has allegedly been said.

"But what if I didn't say it" - If the police officer says you said it, the likelihood of he or she being believed is extremely high. If they do not want you to have a lawyer, every warning light in your head should be flashing bright red and you should refuse to answer questions.
